Dolomite

Dolomite is a mineral composed of magnesium and calcium carbonate [CaMg (CO3) 2]. A substitution occurs by ion exchange of calcium for magnesium in limestone (CaCO3).

It abounds in nature as the main component of dolomites (chemical sedimentary rocks) that are used as a source of magnesium and for the manufacture of refractory materials. It is also used as a flux in metallurgy, ceramic manufacturing, paints, white fillers and as a component in glass manufacturing. It is totally banned as a mineral in the concrete clinker due to its MgO content, since it gives high expansiveness. On the other hand, as concrete aggregate it would be worth, as long as its reaction with cement is analyzed.

In addition to being an industrial mineral, dolomite is highly prized by collectors and museums when it forms large, transparent crystals.
